You receive a Donation Receipt for the value of the securities on transfer day and avoid any capital gains taxes on the appreciation above your cost basis. Contact your investment firm to initiate transfer of shares, bonds or mutual funds.
In January of the following year, you will receive a tax letter acknowledging the tax deductibility of your donation.
